From her seat on the forest floor, she holds the pine cone at eye level and scrutinizes its never ending spiral. Immediately she is drawn in by Mother Nature’s compelling organic symbol. Pinched between her thumb and finger is the conifer’s fruit, the ancient representation of spiritual enlightenment. Life eternal is seen in the careful weave of its scales and she, the bearer of the symbol of illumination, is suddenly lost in time.

She imagines ancient historical heritages swirling together, one layer of culture and allegory over another, spiraling upward to the cone’s ending. Ending? Or, is it the beginning? Her perception of the intended design is confused as the two points vie for position and title.

An infinite and sacred puzzle the pine cone is. Fibonacci would be proud.
