Within in the confines of Washington D.C. is the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. Its magnificent rotunda portrays pivotal scenes from the Christian faith. This Roman Catholic Basilica, also known as America’s Catholic Church, is a shrine dedicated to Mary, the mother of Jesus. She is believed to be conceived without sin, the meaning of “Immaculate Conception”. Mary was designated by the Roman Catholic Church to be the patron saint of the United States. Those who are drawn within its walls can find peace and solace. The prayers of more than a million visitors a year have made the Basilica of the Americas a safe place to come, rest and find the sacred within them.
