The dance circle has been blessed and the lead drum is playing a calling song. It’s time to dance. It’s my turn to stand before one of the Elders, smudge in-hand, to be consecrated for the day’s events. As I close my eyes and open my arms, the familiar scent of sage smoke fills my nostrils and I can instantly feel my body relax. There is something sacred about the moment that’s transports me back to another time and connects me to my ancestors. Just as they understood the importance of preparing to dance their prayers in the circle, so do I now. The Elder taps me on the shoulder bringing me back to the present moment. Time to line up and carry on a centuries-old tradition…it’s time to dance!
