According to the Anishnawbe and other traditional Indigenous teachings, the Four Sacred Medicines are Tobacco, the first plant that the Creator gave to the Native people, sage, cedar and sweetgrass. Although there are many plants used for specific healing reasons, these four are especially revered, with each having a specific purpose in daily life and in ceremony. Each medicine also represents one of the four directions: Tobacco, the East; Cedar, the South; Sage, the West and Sweetgrass, the North.
