A hug is a perfect gift; one size fits all and nobody minds if you exchange it.

~Author Unknown

The other day, someone asked me if I remembered the “best hug” I’d ever received in my entire life. I thought about the question for a while. There have been so many hugs for so many reasons. Was it the day I graduated high school? When I got married? The day my neighbor found me as I walked away from a car accident unscathed? What about hugs of gratitude I receive from patients when I help them get through a difficult procedure? That hug my boss gave me the day mom almost died.

So many hugs, so many memories flitted through my brain, but one stood out above all others. One day on the street, I saw a young man with Down’s syndrome drop a bag full of small balls on the ground. Everything scattered, so I stopped to help him pick them up. When we’d captured the last one, he turned to me and gave me a “gift” I will treasure forever. A genuine, heartfelt hug.

Out of curiosity, I asked, “Why did you do that?”

“Because I can,” was his reply. This simple gesture brought tears to my eyes and joy to my heart. Hands down, “that” was the best hug I ever received. And now . . . I give hugs too, just because I can.

Hugs are miraculous.

They lessen pain

Both in the body and the heart.

Hugs warm you when you’re cold

And make you feel safe

When you’re afraid.

Yet the simplest thing hugs can do

Is the greatest of them all.

Hugs make you feel LOVED.
